Asian Handicap Explained: +0.5, -1, -0.75 and Quarter Lines

Asian handicap takes the draw out of soccer betting. Here's how half, whole and quarter lines actually settle, when you get your stake back, and how to read a line like -0.75 without guessing.

In a normal soccer match result bet there are three outcomes: home win, draw, away win. Asian handicap removes the draw by giving one team a head start in goals. The result is a two-way market — closer to the point spread in American sports, or the run line and puck line in baseball and hockey.

The idea is simple. The lines themselves are where most bettors get lost, because there are three different kinds and each one settles differently.

How the Handicap Works

The handicap is applied to the final score after the match. A team at -1 has one goal taken off its score; a team at +1 has one goal added. Whichever side is ahead after that adjustment wins the bet. The favorite always carries the minus line and the underdog the plus line, and the two sides are always mirror images: Arsenal -1 is the same bet as the opponent at +1, from the other side.

Half-Goal Lines: +0.5, -0.5, -1.5

Half-goal lines are the easiest, because a half goal can never be tied. Every bet is a clear win or loss.

  • -0.5: the team must win. It's effectively the same as backing them to win the match, just without a draw option on the other side.
  • +0.5: the team wins the bet if they win or draw. This is the same outcome as a double chance "win or draw" bet.
  • -1.5: the team must win by two or more goals.
  • +1.5: the team wins the bet if they win, draw, or lose by exactly one goal.

Whole-Goal Lines: 0, -1, +1

Whole-goal lines can land exactly on the margin. When they do, the bet is a push and your stake is refunded.

  • 0 (level ball): win if your team wins, refund if it's a draw, lose if they lose. This is also known as "draw no bet."
  • -1: win by 2+ is a win, win by exactly 1 is a refund, draw or loss is a loss.
  • +1: a win or a draw is a win, a one-goal loss is a refund, a two-goal loss or worse is a loss.

Quarter-Goal Lines: -0.25, -0.75, +0.25, +0.75

Quarter lines look strange, but they follow one rule: your stake is split in half across the two nearest lines.

  • -0.25 = half on 0, half on -0.5
  • -0.75 = half on -0.5, half on -1
  • +0.25 = half on 0, half on +0.5
  • +0.75 = half on +0.5, half on +1

Each half is then settled on its own, which is how you end up with results like "half won" or "half lost."

Example: $20 on a team at -0.75, so $10 on -0.5 and $10 on -1.

  • They win by 2+: both halves win — full win.
  • They win by exactly 1: the -0.5 half wins, the -1 half is refunded — half win.
  • Draw or loss: both halves lose — full loss.

Example: $20 on a team at +0.25, so $10 on 0 and $10 on +0.5.

  • They win: both halves win — full win.
  • Draw: the 0 half is refunded, the +0.5 half wins — half win.
  • They lose: both halves lose — full loss.

Read each row from the point of view of the team carrying that line. Losing by two or more goals is a loss on every line in the table.

Why Bettors Use Asian Handicap

  • No draw to worry about. Two outcomes instead of three makes it easier to compare a price against your own view of the match.
  • Better prices on heavy favorites. A strong favorite at 1.25 to win might be closer to evens at -1 or -1.5. You're taking on more risk, but you're paid for it.
  • A cushion on underdogs. A +0.5 or +1 line lets you back an underdog to stay competitive without needing them to win outright.
  • Usually lower margins. Asian handicap is a two-way market, and two-way markets tend to carry less vig than three-way match result betting.

How to Judge the Right Line

The line you pick should match the margin you actually expect, not just the winner. If you think a favorite wins but only narrowly, -1.5 is the wrong bet even if you're confident — -0.5 or -0.75 fits that view far better. If you expect an underdog to keep it close but aren't confident they avoid defeat, +1 or +1.5 matches that read.

Once you've picked a line, convert its price to implied probability and ask whether your real chance of that outcome is higher. That gap is your edge — and if there isn't one, no line is worth taking.

This is the same margin-first approach behind the handicap picks on Parlitify: every soccer match shows an AI predicted score next to its picks, so you can check whether a handicap line actually fits the expected margin before adding it to a parlay. Plus lines like +0.5 are cushion picks, where the extra goal is the whole point — the same idea behind Safer picks.

The short version: half lines are simple win-or-lose bets, whole lines refund your stake when the margin lands exactly on the line, and quarter lines split your stake across the two nearest lines. Pick the line that matches the margin you expect, then check the price. For match-by-match projections, see the EPL, Serie A and Bundesliga predictions on Parlitify.
